Getting started
How to add Wholeness to your store, choose a style, customize it in the theme editor, and keep a safe copy before you change any code.
Add the theme from the Shopify Theme Store
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, open the Shopify Theme Store and search for Wholeness.
- On the theme’s page, choose a style: Wholeness or Weaveform.
- Click Try theme. The theme is added to Draft themes in your Shopify admin, where you can preview it and customize it with your own products before you buy it. Code editing isn’t available during the trial.
- When you’re ready, click Buy on the theme in Draft themes, and then click Publish. Only purchased themes can be published.
Customizations you make during the trial are kept when you buy the theme. A theme bought from the Shopify Theme Store is licensed to the store where the purchase was made.
Choose or change the style
The style you choose in the Theme Store is applied when the theme is added. To change it later:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
- Find Wholeness and click Edit theme.
- Click the Theme settings icon, and then click Theme style.
- Select Wholeness or Weaveform, click Change style, and then click Save.
Changing the style replaces your current theme settings, such as colors and fonts, with the settings of the new style. Your sections and their content stay in place. To keep a copy of your settings, duplicate the theme first.
Customize in the theme editor
Everything in this documentation, except the notes for developers, is set in the theme editor, with no code. To open it, go to Online Store and click Edit theme.
- Sections are the parts of a page, such as a hero, a featured collection or a newsletter signup. Click Add section in the sidebar to add one, drag sections to change their order, and click a section to see its settings. See Sections and blocks.
- Blocks are the pieces inside a section, such as the slides of a hero or the price on a product page. Click Add block under a section to add one.
- Theme settings apply to the whole store: font, colors, page width, product cards, remembered filters and the cart. See Theme settings.
- The header and the footer are shared by every page. The header holds the announcement bar, the countdown bar and the header itself.
- Use the menu at the top of the editor to switch between the templates of your store: the home page, product pages, collection pages, the cart and the others.
Changes in the editor are applied when you click Save. On a theme that isn’t published, shoppers see your changes only after you publish it.
Your first steps
- Header: upload your Logo, choose the Menu, and turn on Show submenus and Show search if you want them.
- Theme settings › Colors and Typography: set your brand colors and font.
- Theme settings › Product images: check Options shown and Color option. They name the options that product cards show, such as Size and Color, as they are written in your products. See Product cards.
- Home page: replace the sample text and pictures of each section with your own, and remove the sections you don’t need.
- Product pages: check the blocks of the Product information section and their order. See Product pages.
- Filters: in your Shopify admin, go to Apps › Search & Discovery and turn on the filters you want on collection pages. See Filters and sorting.
- Footer: add your menus, social media links and the newsletter block.
Duplicate the theme before you edit code
The theme editor is a safe place to experiment. Editing the theme’s code is not: a mistake can break pages of your store. Before you edit any code file, make a copy of the theme:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
- Next to Wholeness, click the … button, and then click Duplicate.
- A copy named “Copy of Wholeness” is added to your themes. Edit the copy, preview it, and publish it only when it works.
Changes to the theme’s code are not covered by theme support. If you need them, we suggest hiring a Shopify Partner. See the support policy.
Update to a new version
When a new version of Wholeness is released, Shopify shows a notification for the theme in Online Store. To update:
- Click the notification, and then click Add to draft themes. The new version is added as a copy; your live theme doesn’t change.
- Settings and content you set in the theme editor are copied to the new version. Edits to the theme’s code are carried over only when they don’t conflict with the update, so keep a copy of any code you changed.
- Click Review to check the new version, and then click Publish when you’re ready.
The changelog lists what changed in each version.
